Today is the last day to complete any of the warm ups or Friday Free Draws for November. I will be closing all the November prompts at the end of today. Take the time to double check that you have completed them all.
Go check out this article on WHITE SPACE and in your own words (don't copy-paste), tell me what you understand white space to be in graphic design.

It's Friday Free Draw time! Yay!!! Here's your options for today's warm up:
Remember: 5x5" and 150dpi minimum.
Other Things Today: I'm going to be filming 5th period today. Be prepared. Be aware. You've been asked to design the fabric for a table cloth. The clients are in their late 50s and want to recreate the 1960s in their new home. The table cloth must look like a design pattern from the 1960s. What shapes, colors and other elements would you put together for this client. Remember, they won't pay you if it doesn't match what they've requested.... and you need to pay your rent! I'm out at a meeting today. I wanted to mention a few things here.... You guys did a great job yesterday on our discussion in class. I appreciate your participation and behavior. It's really nice to know that you're willing to both learn new things, and to help out with my video certification needs.
Today I'd like two things from you. THING 1. Please make sure you turn in your finished 1960s artwork.
THING 2: Start working on your Friday Free Draw early!! You've all done a great job identifying visual themes from the work of the 1960s. A few of the artists I've featured have included Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso and Peter Max during this project. While it's important to understand what Principles and Elements make up a particular style of art, it's also important to understand WHY that style happened, and in what context.
We are Here to Make a Better World "We are here to make a better world. No amount of rationalization or blaming can preempt the moment of choice each of us brings to our situation here on this planet. The lesson of the 60's is that people who cared enough to do right could change history.
.....And we were right." - Abbie Hoffman Look through the following images. These are all pieces created in the 1960s by artists who focused on the psychedelic art style. Using your own words, describe some common principles and elements that these pieces use. What do they have in common. What makes these fit into this style or genre... other than the time period?
You can click on each one of these to see it larger. It's Free Draw Friday!! Remember our lesson from last Friday. You can use layers, selections, and loads of different kinds of brushes and tools along with the stylus and tablet to create amazing things. Try finding a photo of an animal or person, and tracing it with simple lines. See what you end up with! Don't forget to post your drawing here by the end of the period. Step 1: save as a jpg file. Step 2: upload to Flickr. Step 3: Paste a link to your drawing on this blog post. Take a look at this piece. In your own words (Don't read other people's comments before typing!!!!), Tell me what elements and principles of art this piece is using the most strongly. Give me at least five sentences to describe it.
Elements of Art: value, color, form, shape, space, line, texture Principles of Art: emphasis, pattern, balance, unity, movement, contrast, rhythm Design Principles: contrast, proximity, repetition, alignment I'm out at a meeting today. Keep working on your 1960s art. Focus on the details of your silhouette, as that will really help people identify what the shape is supposed to be. There's instructions for text use in the groupshare if you get that far. Thursday, I'll do a text demo, too.
DAILY: Peter Max is well known for his 1960s, "counter culture" style. He uses many American patriotic symbols in his work as well. But, he was not born in the US, and didn't move here until he was a teenager. Tell me... Peter Max was born in ______________________. He and his family escaped to ________________ where they lived for 10 years. They moved to ___________ in 1948, and also stayed in _________________ for a few months before finally moving to Brooklyn, NY in 1953. 1: If you didn't upload and post your sphere drawing from Friday, be sure to do so today. I know I didn't get all of them.
2. Daily: Ariel is a font that is used frequently in MS Word, PowerPoint, etc. Ariel is actually based off of an older, more famous font named HELVETICA. Using the internet, and in your own words, find out who invented HELVETICA and what they invented it for.
We're going to have a Friday Free Draw.... but first I want to go through a Photoshop drawing lesson. Get your stylus and tablet ready, and open a 5x5 inch, 150 dpi Photoshop document. I'll want you to turn in this drawing here today. Save it as a jpg at the end, upload to flickr, and post a link here.
Take a look at this piece. In your own words (Don't read other people's comments before typing!!!!), Tell me what elements and principles of art this piece is using the most strongly. Give me at least five sentences to describe it.
Elements of Art: value, color, form, shape, space, line, texture Principles of Art: emphasis, pattern, balance, unity, movement, contrast, rhythm Design Principles: contrast, proximity, repetition, alignment Choose one of these pieces.
Describe the piece. Give me at least 5 sentences. Use descriptive words, and vocabulary from the Elements & Principles. What do you see? What does it make you think of? How does it make you feel? What do you think the artist's intention was with this piece. What do you think they wanted the audience to see, feel and know. So, looks like not everyone did the warm up yesterday. Just because I'm not here, doesn't mean you don't do the work. If your boss is out at work, that doesn't mean free day.... make sure you get it done. Today, take a look at the following albums. Choose one, and tell me the following things: 1. Which one did you choose? 2. Is it successful at expressing the music the artist/band performs? 3. What elements of art does this piece use mostly? 4: What's one principle of art that this piece is showing strongly? 5: Use 5 descriptive words, writing about what this piece looks like. Be specific. Don't use words like "cool" or "stupid." What do you see? Hey, so I'm out sick today. My apologies. A couple things I'd like you to do while I'm gone....
1) Use the drawing pad and stylus to make another version of your album cover. Think about layers and blending modes, and gradients and all the stuff we went over at the beginning of the semester. You could even check out THIS TUTORIAL for information on how to use adjustment masks in layers. Good stuff. I use this technique all the time, almost daily. 2) Go find a tutorial that you think is helpful for the drawing tablets and photoshop. Use, see if it is worthwhile and helpful, and post a link to it here with a description of what it's about. The goal: sharing info with your classmates. See you tomorrow. I know you'll be cool for the sub. It's Friday Free Draw Day!
NEW STUFF! There are tablets at your seat. Come check out a pen, and USE THE TABLET today. Be patient, it takes a little bit to get used to. Here's a list of things to draw or the option of drawing whatever you like. You can choose either option. Today we'll go through the turn in process together. 1. Create a document in Photoshop, 5x5" 2. Draw! 3. Save as a JPG file, with today's date (example: "Draw9-13-13.jpg") 4. Log in to Flickr. 5. Upload your drawing |
